When I turned 44 I was extremely heavy. I had a 15 and a 13 year old daughter and a 5 year old son. I was so exhausted all the time, always needing to take naps. My daughter had to cook dinner for the family because I had a lot of pain and I couldn't stand in the kitchen.

One of the worst things I remember was, all these other parents walked their kindergartener up to school on the first day. There was a long sidewalk that leads to about 25 steps to get up to the school. Those steps hurt me so much. I thought I can't walk up those steps to bring my son to his first day of school. I stopped the car, and had to say, 'okay I'll watch you, I'll watch you go up.' He was only in kindergarten and here I was dropping him off like the fourth and fifth graders and watching this little boy walk up alone as he's passing parents coming back from dropping their kids off.

I'd go to bed at 8 at night. I'd go to bed and miss their homework, miss their stories of the day. I'd have one half hour when we got home and I would say to the kids, 'please let mommy rest. Mommy's back is killing her. Just let her rest.' I felt bad for the kids. I felt so bad for them because this is not the mom that they deserved.
