Weight Lost: 142 lbs*
*The success stories depicted in this section are representation of these individuals only and do not represent all OPTIFAST patients. The typical OPTIFAST patient loses over 50 pounds in 18-24 weeks. For many dieters, weight loss is only temporary.
If you had told me in January 2009 that, in less than two years, I would be a runner and complete a marathon, I would have said, “Look at me. I weigh 281 pounds. I can’t walk one mile, much less run one.” But here I sit in January 2011 and, thanks to the OPTIFAST program, I weigh 139 pounds and I have become a runner.
I went to the doctor on that January morning in 2009 because I had a sore throat. I was not thinking about losing weight. In fact, I had begun to tell myself that I was just always going to be fat. I had reconciled myself to the fact that I could not lose weight or, if I did lose it, I would just gain it back again. After examining my sore throat, my doctor suggested the OPTIFAST program and asked me to think about it. My first thoughts were, “I can’t do that” and then “only liquids for 12 weeks, no way.” But then, on the way home, I began to think about it. Twelve weeks isn’t really that long a time and, if I could lose 50 pounds, then I would weigh about what I have weighed most of my adult life. The more I thought about it, the more I began to believe I could do it.
Thankfully, I did not have any serious health issues, but I had begun to worry about the fact that my dad passed away from a heart attack at 48 and I would soon be 48. Within a couple of weeks of starting the OPTIFAST program, I started exercising by walking, 5 minutes at a time at lunch. As I got stronger, I walked longer and started running some. In September 2009, I was encouraged to enter a 5k race. Again my first thought was, “I can’t do that”. But, I decided to take the challenge. Not only did I finish the race, but I enjoyed it and wanted to do more.
Now, it’s been over a year since I reached my goal. I have maintained my weight loss and I am actually below my OPTIFAST goal. I continue to run and have done multiple 5k’s, two half marathons, and a full marathon.
Now I don’t think, “I can’t do that”. I know I can do anything and I am in training for a mini triathlon.
