Weight Lost: 60 lbs*
*The success stories depicted in this section are representative of these individuals only and do not represent all OPTIFAST patients. The typical OPTIFAST patient loses over 50 pounds in 18-24 weeks. For many dieters, weight loss is only temporary.
I’ve always been an emotional eater – no matter what my emotion, I used it as an excuse to eat. I ate when I was happy, I ate when I was sad, I ate when I was stressed, I ate when I was bored. After my oldest son passed away from brain cancer in 2003, I ate because I was depressed, and I ate, and I ate.
I didn’t want my poor health and habits to be my son’s legacy, so I tried losing weight with different diets. The problem is they all focused on food, not behaviors. I needed to get time away from food so I could reset my habits. The OPTIFAST program was the tool that let me do that.
Coupled with medical monitoring and a weekly class that taught me the behaviors I needed to be successful, I was able to take the weight off, and keep it off. My relationship with food changed so that I was now in control. I learned how to plan out my meals, and log them to make sure I stayed on track. I learned the value of exercise, and that is where my metaphorical journey turned into a physical journey.
I started riding a bicycle again, and spurred on by a colleague, I signed up for a charity ride. I loved the challenge, I loved the camaraderie of fellow cyclists, and I loved that my physical efforts were raising money for a deserving cause. I was hooked! Last year, I ended up riding more than 1500 miles, many of them in charity rides. My biggest accomplishment was riding 111 miles at the Tour of Tucson, and being part of a team that raised more than $500,000 to help end the scourge of polio. Through the OPTIFAST program, I found success in weight loss, a renewed passion for life, and a way to use this active “new body” I had gained to help others. That is a legacy that my son would be proud of.
I still use OPTIFAST today to as one of the core tools that helps me maintain. An OPTIFAST bar is my go-to energizing snack on long rides. Every time, I pick up a product I am reminded of the journey I have taken.
