Weight Lost: 120 lbs*
*The success stories depicted in this section are representative of these individuals only and do not represent all OPTIFAST patients. The typical OPTIFAST patient loses over 50 pounds in 18-24 weeks. For many dieters, weight loss is only temporary.
I know the mind of a fat woman. I lived it for over 20 years. Fat women live a life of shame. Our photo albums are filled with pictures of everyone else because we won’t stand in front of the camera. We put off family photos, cruises, and reunions for years because events like these ask us to stand in the spotlight of the silent judgment we know is in the minds of others. Fat women are quintessential overachievers. We are the best professionals, cooks, and child care providers – because we feel like if we are just good enough “out there” we won’t be reminded of what’s “in here” – the shame we feel for ourselves. We rarely shop for clothing for ourselves…and when forced to buy, we don’t look in mirrors because nothing looks good on 250 pounds.
In March of 2011, a very good friend sat me down and confronted me with the truth. He said, “Kathy, you’re fat. And your fat is keeping you from doing what you’re meant to do.” Before gaining weight, I was a television reporter. I left my career to get married and have children (and gain 140 pounds), but I dreamed of doing a radio show in my “retirement” years. I had a name for it – The Sitting Room. I had topics and guests … I even had a website. I just lacked the confidence to step up the microphone and get started.
In June of 2011, I started the OPTIFAST program. I chose the program because it gave me no choices. I could wake up every day and know my “plan” – and stick to it. I liked it because the program involved real medical professionals – not just employees in white coats. Within 3 months, I lost 40 pounds and began exercising. Within 6 months, I weighed less than 200 pounds for the first time in 15 years. I cried. And, in 9 months, I reached 120-pound weight loss. 9 pants sizes. 43% of my body weight.
In December of 2011, we had our first family picture taken in 12 years. In January 2012, I launched my radio show and proudly posted my picture on the web site. I’m no longer invisible when I walk in the room. I run three miles a day and love to wear clothes. When I walk by an overweight woman, my heart hurts for her. Because while she can’t tell – my mind is still where she is; I know her pain, and I would love to see her free. The OPTIFAST program did that for me. The medical professionals at the OPTIFAST program saved my life.
